Malaysian bank ad offends with goofy Filipina maid stereotype

Oddly, South China Post is calling this an example of "blackface":

Nonetheless, it is pretty racist. In a comedy bit that would be at home in the west in the 1960s, the unnamed Chinese actor plays both himself and his bumbling Filipina maid. It's an ad promoting advertisement "domestic helper insurance" from Malaysia’s Hong Leong Bank.

The ad, which ran in Hong Kong, was harshly criticized by advocates for migrant domestic workers:
“You are making comedy out of someone, out of a community,” said Eni Lestari, spokeswoman for the Asian Migrants’ Coordinating Body. “For [Hongkongers] it’s funny, but what they don’t realise is what’s funny is actually racist.”
The bank, in turn, issued the standard non-apology:
“We regret that our recent advertisement … resulted in comments about the advertisement being racist,” said spokeswoman Norlina Yunus. “At no time did Hong Leong … intend to offend any person or be to any extent discriminatory on grounds of race, sex or otherwise.”
No, maybe they didn't "intend" to, but insensitivity is not always an intentional offence. That said, it wouldn't hurt to say, "We are sorry for being so insensitive to the dignity of Filipinos, as well as to domestic workers of any ethnicity. We are taking steps to ensure that all of our advertising is more carefully reviewed against our corporate values, and a gesture we are contributing X to a fund to help make this right."

Lynx offers to help you "cure" gay women

This silly little promotion is on the Lynx Hong Kong Facebook page. But it has a shady context.

Cecil Chao is the Hong Kong billionaire who has offered a $65 million "marriage bounty" to any man who marries his daughter, Gigi Chao.

Gigi, 33, has a longterm relationship with another woman, who she wed via civil partnership in France earlier this year.

So to recap, Lynx/Axe would like you lads to know that drenching yourself in that stank is a surefire way to "convert" lesbians.

Total dick move.

More weird skin whitening ads from Asia

While the Western world tries desperately to convince its pale citizens to keep out of the sun and tanning booths, the East continues to baffle us with its obsession with skin whitening products.

In this case, a hand cream promises to make your skin so blindingly pallid, it will cast a white shadow. (Hmmm... that reminds me of a TV show I used to watch.)

The exaggeration is too obvious to accuse TBWA Hong Kong of false advertising in the concept itself, but these products can run the gamut from useless to downright dangerous. It's a shame people can't learn to love diverse beauty ideas, rather than being preyed on by snake oil ads.

Parents of young kids: How terrifying is this coffee ad?

Via adwomen.org

I get that this ad by Leo Burnett, Hong Kong, supposed to be funny. But if the bus driver is in such bad shape, I don't think another cup of coffee is the answer. As both a parent and a road safety social marketer, I hate being reminded of real life problems like this in a silly consumer ad.

Stop F---ing The Sharks!

And by that, I mean "Finning"...

I Believe in Advertising posted this ad from Grey Hong Kong that speaks out agaisnt the Chinese tradition of killing sharks just to add their (tasteless) dried fins to prestigious wedding soups. It's really kind of freaking me out, but I thought I'd share based solely on the urgency of the issue:

IBiA also posted this translation:

“Jaws never return
Shark killing tragedies. Showing every day.
73 million sharks are brutally killed every year. In Hong Kong last year, 4460 tons of shark’s fin were consumed. Experts estimate that in the next decade, most species of sharks will be exterminated. Your choice will determine the ending of this tragedy…
Rescue sharks. Preserve the ocean. Please stop consuming shark’s fin.”

I should add that, if you don't stop eating that stuff, my 6-year-old radical naturalist son will also kick your ass.
