This Harmon Kardon "ad" is just nasty

Sometimes I look at an ad and think, "why did the Art Director even think of this?"

The weird oral-foot-fetishy violence of it aside, there's no game going on and nobody in the stands. So why would anyone be bothered by their cheers?

I'm guessing that this is another example of a vanity ad, not actually appearing in any paid media or necessarily approved by the client, submitted for creative awards shows. Sad.

Two other executions include a dog with its head up its ass and a musician with his head up his sousaphone.

Apparently, Jesus ads are a thing this week

These ones hail from Astos Dizainas McCann Erickson in Lithuania. Robert Kalinkin is a Lithuanian designer.

Overlooking the awkward translation, as intentionally-blasphemous ads go, these are a little better than the fake Ukrainian International Airlines one I posted this morning. The whole "taking his name in vain" thing just seems to belong more in the fashion industry.

WWJD? He'd get branding advice from McCann!

When I was writing a post for Osocio this morning, about a campaign for Reporters Without Borders, I briefly visited the McCann, Germany, site to see if there was a version in original language. Instead, I was treated to a rather ballsy image show that portrayed the account team advising Jesus on his brand symbolism.

It's a very funny in-joke for admen, the client picking the entirely wrong approach, while the agency folk desperately try to steer him in the recommended direction. (To take it too literally, though, why would they even have shown him the square and the circles? And isn't he choosing the instrument of his death?)

Put this one down to European humour. Hopefully, offended Christians won't react as violently as some of their Muslim brethren have to recent religious ridicule.

The other image in the series features Fidel Castro and his iconic cigar:

Ironically, the Cuban leader stopped smoking them in the 1980s, due to health. And he actually enacted some pretty strong smoking bans in Cuba before his retirement. But I get what they're saying.

This is edgy stuff, and the over-the-top arrogance plays as a gag. But does it make good business sense for the global advertising brand? I guess we'll see.

Update: Adland's Åsk Wäppling informs me that this stunt is actually eight years old. I guess they still like it.

F'd Ad Fridays: Because fat people have no feelings

These two recent ads, both from MCCann Erickson, Tel Aviv, are pretty mean-spirited.

Way to prove to the world that advertisers are in a conspiracy to make people feel bad about themselves, guys.

F'd Ad Fridays: Serbian "Skins" ads are real torture

The art direction is interesting. The messaging strategy is on.

But...

Dudes! Torture? The Spanish Inquisition? It may have been over 500 years ago, but it's hardly light comedy. (Unlike when Monty Python did it.) Considering torture is still a scourge of war, and religious intolerance still a major cause, half a millennium might still be "too soon".
