Toronto printer "quotes" Jian Ghomeshi on mailer

Jezebel

Using, or parodying, a famous quote is one of the laziest creative tricks in the book. But Toronto's Corktown Printing Co. decided to take it in an extra-creepy direction by doing a word-for-word sendup of Jian Ghomeshi.

The ex-CBC radio host was fired over accusations that he hit, choked, and otherwise abused women on dates going back years.

When he was first fired, Ghomeshi wrote a Facebook rant outing himself as a BDSM enthusiast, and painting himself as a victim of corporate prudery. Part of it read:
Let me be the first to say that my tastes in the bedroom may not be palatable to some folks. They may be strange, enticing, weird, normal, or outright offensive to others. We all have our secret life. But that is my private life. That is my personal life. And no one, and certainly no employer, should have dominion over what people do consensually in their private life.

Here's the inside of the Mailer:

Ghomeshi's attempt at rallying sympathy was quickly overtaken by an expose of his non-consensual abuse of women on dates and sexual harassment of colleagues. Since then, several women have come forward to media with creepily similar stories about his violence, including Trailer Park Boys actress (and RCAF Captain) Lucy DeCoutere and author Reva Seth.

Jezebel reports that a spokesperson for Corktown didn't see any problem with the mailer. "It's a little satire," she told them. "There's no intention for it to be offensive."

The mailer was created by Toronto's Agency Next Door, and has been featured on their Facebook Page for more than two weeks.

There was just an intention to make light of a high-profile case of violence against women. Nothing offensive in that, is there?

Dumbest car ads ever appear in Slovakia

This bizarrely ill-conceived "Ford" campaign was submitted to Ads of The World by JANDL, in Bratislava, Slovakia. The comments immediately questioned whether a venerable old brand like Ford would ever approve such weird and offensive creative.

They didn't. According to JANDL's site, the campaign was signed off by "Bratislava Summit Motors, Ford distributor in Slovakia." I don't imagine the brand mothership will be pleased.

Especially since one of them is blatantly racist:

Nicely done, completely twisted viral cartoon ad

The Magic Fun Store is "a small art gallery and  tattoo studio in Tucson, AZ." Now you know who they are. And in a minute, you won't be able to forget them (or unsee these images):

It turns out animation is a side-business at the shop, so they decided to promote themselves with a little ditty about a unicorn who can't get enough dolphin love. This one was done by BAMiAM.tv (B.A. Miale) "a video artist who mashes up her playfully psychedelic visuals in real time on a keytar."

Considering their industry, and the shop's carefree brand, this ought to work out well for them.

Latvian health ministry frowns on "beer money"

This is the new 1 Lat coin, issued at the height of midsummer festivities in the Baltic country to celebrate the beloved beverage.

According to the Bank of Latvia (via The Telegraph), "After water and tea, beer is the third most popular beverage in the world. The builders of the Egyptian pyramids were given three vessels of beer a day."

But apparently, the Bank received a strongly-worded letter from the Latvian health ministry, complaining that "The coin contradicts our efforts to cut down on the consumption of alcohol in society."

Apparently they're on a crusade. Earlier this year, the health ministry also wrote to a school that had the history of whisky as part of a senior oral exam. They said the topic was "unacceptable."

Meanwhile, Latvians are lining up to get their hands on the new coins.

Scarlett Johansson Planned Parenthood ad KKKized

The ad battle over abortion in the United States gets more and more bizarre.

Here's the Christian Defense Coalition's pitch: Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood and sexual revolutionary, had a regrettable involvement with the eugenics movement in her early days. There's no defending this. She even gave a lecture on birth control to the women's auxiliary of the KKK in New Jersey ("one of the weirdest experiences I had in lecturing").

So, sensing a wedge issue in the "race card", this group has decided that they can make the claim that today's Planned Parenthood has a racist agenda against African Americans.

Furthermore, they would like you to know that celebrities who support Planned Parenthood are pretty much the KKK:

Yeah, that's weird. here's the original:

I don't even know what else to say. It's like drawing a Hitler moustache on someone and calling it a political action. Not even worth refuting.

Although it's worth noting, for the sake of irony, that Ms. Sanger hated abortion. She never lived to see it legalized, but it's interesting to note that the whole family planning movement was started as a way to prevent abortions. Hmmm...
