F'd Ad Fridays: Racist Ramadan ads

According to 154 Media, this series of ads sparked controversy in Malaysia when non-Muslim minorities complained about the racism depicted by the Chinese tourist speaking accented English.

Using insensitive cultural stereotypes to promote cultural sensitivity. Jesus! (Oh, wait! Wrong prophet.) Let's just say it's both disturbing to see the global nature of xenophobia and comforting that some people won't stand for it.

  1. I understand the context, but I must say, that is the first time in my life I have ever seen blurred out shoulders. So weird when you're used to seeing commercials with almost-naked people and no blurring.

  4. Your post is almost as rude and racist as the ad. 154 Media did not say any of that. You made it up from your own prejudice. The lady is not a tourist. She's Malaysian Chinese. She only has an accent to you because you are Canadian. Stereotypes? The only stereotype is the racist stereotype you saw in your head. You do not even understand the ad at all.

  5. I am aware of Chinese Malaysians, but the awkward characterization didn't seem as if the woman could possibly be a local. Plus, the tone and content of the message felt like it was aimed at outsiders.

I guess I assumed she was a tourist because to portray and speak to your own countrymen (and women) this way made the xenophobia somehow even worse. It's an appalling ad regardless.

BTW, if you are going to take an insulting tone with me, Anon, please sign your posts. I do all of this under my real name.
